Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from ODI cricket
Glenn Maxwell, Australia's best all-around player, has declared his intention to retire from One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

New Delhi (India) June 2: With an incredible career strike rate of 126.70, Glenn Maxwell leaves the format as the batsman with the greatest strike rate of any ODI player with at least 2000 runs.
The right-handed batter hit 23 fifties and four hundreds. In his ODI career, he also claimed 77 wickets, with his best record being 4/40 against India in Rajkot. His final ODI batting total is 3990 runs at an average of 33.81.He will continue to be available for selection in the T20I.
Maxwell said, “My decision to retire from one-day international cricket was probably more on the back of the first couple of games in the Champions Trophy.”
“I started to (realise) that if I don’t have the perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that. It feels like it’s a tiring affair just to get through – and almost surviving – the 50 overs, let alone being at my best throughout that 50 overs, and then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well. I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions.”
He also added, “I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.”
Maxwell stated that he had decided to retire from the format during Australia's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign which ended with a loss in the semi final to India in Dubai.
Maxwell made his debut for Australia in an ODI in 2012. He was a member of the teams that won the World Cup in 2015 and 2023.
Maxwell also said, “I think it’s time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully, they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role.”
Cricket Australia said, “Maxwell has made the decision to prioritise his preparation for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the Big Bash League and his other global commitments." in a statement.
The Chief selector of Australian cricket George Bailey said, "As with other greats of the game, crowds have flocked to grounds just to watch Glenn bat and children have been inspired to pick up a bat after seeing him put opposition attacks to the sword with a breathtaking array of shots." about Maxwell.
