Bengaluru Brothers Move Entire House 100 Ft to Preserve Mother's Memories

A common and ambitious effort is being taken on by two brothers in Thubarahalli Palya, East Bengaluru, who are moving their two-story home 100 feet in honour of their late father and in memory of their mother's love for their home. The Times of India reported that this remarkable feat is being done to address ongoing water problems and preserve their father's memories.

A house soaked in memories

After seeing frequent waterlogging as a result of the overflowing Thubarahalli Lake and poor drainage systems, Y Devaraj and his younger brother Y Vasu, who are both in their 50s and work in the real estate industry, made the decision to move.

In order to honour our mother's strong connection to the house and our father's history, we planned to relocate the house to a 10-gunta property that is only 100 meters away, Devaraj told TOI.

It is expected that the relocation procedure, which started on Wednesday, will take about 25 days. In addition to ₹5 lakh for renovations, the brothers have set aside ₹10 lakh for the move.

A mother’s unbreakable bond with her home

Before the current three-story building was built in 2002, the family resided on the same property in a small sheet house. Yellappa, their father, had spent ₹11 lakh to construct what he regarded as his ideal house.

"I had my children here; they grew up in this house," their 70-year-old mother, Shanthamma, stated. "I was devastated when my sons suggested tearing it down and starting over. I couldn't bear to see this house destroyed because it holds so many memories of my spouse.

The boys promised to move the entire house rather than tear it down because they understood their mother's feelings.

How the house is being moved

Shri Ram Building Lifting (Atham Ram and Sons) has taken on the challenging task of moving the structure.

"We use special techniques to ensure that not a single window, door, or wall is damaged," said Vikas Rana, managing director of the organisation. Yellappa's house is being moved using about 200 iron jacks, 125 iron rollers, and seven main jacks.

The house has been moved fifteen feet so far. It will be slowly moved another 85 feet to its new foundation over the course of the following 30 days.
