Chandigarh IPS Officer to Lead Probe in Colonel Assault Case

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] April 9: In a surprising turn of events, the probe into the alleged assault on Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath is now under the watch of Chandigarh Police. The high court felt the old investigation had too many gaps, so it ordered a new one. This time, SP Manjeet Sheoran, a respected IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, will handle the case. The decision brought fresh hope to the colonel’s family, who have been waiting for real action.

Family shaken after severe attack, still awaiting justice

It all started during the night of March 13–14 outside a small eatery in Patiala. What should have been a regular outing turned into a nightmare for the colonel and his son. A few policemen reportedly beat him badly and even snatched his identity card. His wife Jasvinder Kaur was allegedly forced to settle the matter quietly. This behaviour shook the entire family’s trust in the system.

High court dissatisfied with earlier efforts by Punjab Police

The Punjab and Haryana High Court saw something was not right. On April 3, Justice HS Brar raised serious concerns over delays in the FIR and lack of action. Earlier hearings had also pointed out similar issues. The court offered three choices—CBI, Chandigarh Police, or SIT—to handle the matter. Finally, the baton was passed to Chandigarh Police. The aim is now clear: complete the probe in four months.

From Bihar to Andaman, his track record inspires confidence

SP Manjeet Sheoran isn’t new to difficult cases. From serving in Bihar, Delhi to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, he has handled many responsibilities. At present, he also looks after intelligence and economic offences in Chandigarh. People hope that with his experience and clean image, the case will finally move in the right direction. He now holds the key to restoring faith in justice for the colonel.

A bigger question on police behaviour and accountability

This case is not just about one incident—it raises bigger concerns. How can common people feel safe if even army officers are treated like this? The FIR, surprisingly, was not even based on the colonel’s statement at first. Only after days of waiting did a new FIR get registered. This delay has led to public anger and questions over the behaviour of police officials. The new probe is a chance to answer them.
