False Reports of Imran Khan’s Death Spark Social Media Frenzy as Family Alleges Brutal Jail Assault
Numerous posts on Social Media Platforms, including the site X allege that Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan currently incarcerated at the Rawalpindi Jail Facility, has unfortunately passed away. This false report has spread rapidly through social media sites with the hashtag #ImranKhan trending across many social media platforms.
New Delhi (India) November 26: The initial source of these false stories stems from one account identified as "Afghan Times," which stated via an official message that they had credible sources stating that Imran was murdered while in his current place of incarceration, specifically at the Adiala Jail located in Rawalpindi. At this time, the claims have not been substantiated by any reputable sources or government authorities as would typically happen/apply in order for the truth of the claim(s) to be established.
Social Media Abuzz with False Death Claims
The most recent falsified story among many others surfaced after family members of Imran Khan made public observations of their ill-treatment at the hands of law enforcement officers while attempting to visit their brother inside Adiala Jail. The reported incidents raised many suspicions considering reports that Imran Khan had been placed in solitary confinement and that officers were now abusing their authority when questioned about these violations.
Reports that Imran Khan had died suddenly on Wednesday were followed by reports that thousands of his fans stormed the Rawalpindi jail where he had been held.
Family Alleges Abuse and Solitary Confinement
Khan’s three sisters—Noreen, Aleema and Uzma—claim their brother was subject to "brutal assault" while being held in Adiala Jail, where he has historically complained of harassment from guards.
The sisters are calling on the IGP of Punjab to immediately begin investigations into all police officers involved in the alleged assault.
Khan's sisters wrote to Usman Anwar, the IGP of Punjab, alleging that the alleged violence was brutal, premeditated and executed by the police without provocation.
We peacefully protested over concerns for his health condition. We neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement, nor engaged in any unlawful conduct. Yet, without warning or provocation, the streetlights in the area were abruptly switched off, deliberately casting the scene into darkness. What followed was a brutal and orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel,” Noreen Niazi said in a letter.
Punjab Government Tightens Restrictions
The Punjab government has imposed an unannounced restriction on the holding of meetings for the past 30 days.
Before last week's incident, the police had allegedly detained Imran Khan's sisters and separated them from one another after the sisters staged a sit-in in front of the prison for 10 hours demanding a weekly visit with Khan, and brought considerable media attention to their plight.
Khan’s sisters claim he is being held in solitary confinement under inhumane conditions and that he should be allowed to leave.
