Guwahati suffers from major rainfall; IMD issues red alert

New Delhi (India) May 31: Assam faces major challenges due to the state's continuous rain, which has caused significant waterlogging in Guwahati. Schools and colleges have been closed in the impacted districts and government workers have been granted special casual leave by Chief Minister Sarma. A red alert has been issued for a number of districts, and the administration is keeping a close eye on the alarming situation.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has warned the Guwahati people that if the heavy rains continue, there may be landslides, tree collapses, traffic jams, and waterlogging.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said, “The state government is monitoring the situation. Due to heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, large areas have been affected. Tomorrow, in Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro), all state government employees will get a special casual leave, schools & colleges to remain shut and private establishments are also advised to take measures accordingly.”

He also added, "We have invited Meghalaya Chief Minister on June 2 for a discussion on the issue of rampant hill cutting and the resultant floods and landslides which are affecting both states, particularly Guwahati city.”

A clear low-pressure region over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha is the cause of the heavy rain and it is predicted that it will grow into a depression in the next 24 hours.

A red alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for a number of Assamese and Manipur areas with a warning of particularly high winds and rains.

Heavy rain and waterlogging in the Assam capital have also caused the cancellation of many flights between Calcutta and Guwahati.

A red alert has been issued for May 31 in the districts of Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, and Darrang by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) which is located in Guwahati.

Three incidents of landslides have been reported in Guwahati. But there have been no reported casualties.

A number of parts of Guwahati including Rukminigaon, Beltola Survey, Hatigaon, Geetanagar, Anil Nagar, Lakhimi Nagar, Jatia, Maligaon and Panjabari have been receiving continuous rainfall since morning.
