Uttarakhand Unveils New Garden Inspired by Mahabharata with 37 Plants

Uttarakhand (India) December 31 : Uttarakhand has launched a unique ethnobotanical garden in Haldwani, designed to celebrate the ecological and environmental significance of the Mahabharata. Situated on one acre of land, the garden aims to showcase 37 plant species mentioned in the epic. 

This initiative by the Uttarakhand Forest Department highlights the rich botanical knowledge embedded in ancient Indian texts and its relevance to modern environmental awareness.

A Tribute to Nature in Mahabharata

The Mahabharata, one of India’s most respected epics, is not just a tale of wars and heroes; it is also rich with references to nature, plants, and their medicinal and ecological importance.

The garden in Haldwani serves as a tribute to the plants mentioned in this ancient text. These plants were valued for their medicinal properties and spiritual significance, and now, the garden offers a chance to reconnect with this natural heritage.

37 Plant Species from the Epic

In total, 37 different plant species are showcased in the garden. Each plant has been carefully selected based on its mention in the Mahabharata, ensuring the garden reflects both the diversity and ecological relevance of the epic’s testimonials.

Some of the notable plants include medicinal herbs, aromatic shrubs, and sacred plants that hold a special place in Hindu traditions. The forest department has worked closely with experts to ensure the plants are grown in conditions that mimic their natural habitats.
