39 Dead, 51 Injured After Massive Stampede at Vijay’s Karur Election Rally in Tamil Nadu
Tragic events occurred during Vijay's Karur election campaign. A huge crowd of people killed 39 people and left others struggling to survive.

New Delhi (India) September 28: A stampede happened at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay's campaign event in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday. It claimed the lives of at least 39 people, including 10 children and 16 women. The actor-turned-politician had to stop his address halfway through because the audience became restless. People also began fainting at the crowded rally.
Crowd Rush Causes Panic During Vijay’s Speech
Vijay had to stop his speech and beg for calm when a number of party members and children passed out from the crush of the crowd on Saturday night. He also asked his supporters to give emergency ambulances space so they could reach the people who needed it. Senthil Balaji is the leader of the DMK and the district collector. He went to the hospital after the incident to evaluate the situation.
PM Modi Share Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the incident. He posted, “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” on social media platform X.
Chief Minister Stalin Announces Help and Investigation
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited Karur to meet the families of the victims. He said, "So far, 39 people have died. In the history of our state, never has such a large number of people lost their lives in a program organised by a political party, and such a tragedy should never happen in the future either. Currently, 51 people are undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.”
He adds, "With a heavy heart, I pay homage to those who have lost their lives. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the families of the deceased. A compensation of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to those who were injured. I have ordered the formation of an inquiry commission headed by a retired High Court judge."
Vice President Expresses Grief
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also offered his condolences to the affected. He said, “The tragic incident at the public gathering in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has caused unspeakable pain. I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving parents who have lost their loved ones, to their relatives, and to the people of Tamil Nadu in this moment of inconsolable sorrow. I pray to the Almighty for the speedy and complete recovery of those injured and receiving treatment in hospitals.”
Police File Cases Against TVK Leaders
The police have filed cases against TVK district secretary Mathiazhagan, party general secretary Bussy Anand and joint general secretary C T Nirmal Kumar under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These cases include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, reckless acts endangering life, and disobedience of lawful orders.
Vijay's statewide campaign is now underway for the 2026 Assembly elections. It included the Karur event. In the speech, Vijay also predicted that during the next six months, there will be a shift in power in Tamil Nadu politics.
