ICC appoints Sanjog Gupta as the new ICC CEO

New Delhi (India) July 7: Sanjog Gupta was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday. Gupta will become the ninth person to hold the position when he formally takes over on July 7, 2025.

Gupta is currently the CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar. He is an experienced member of the Indian sports and media industry.

JioStar has announced internally that Ishan Chatterjee, chief business officer for sports revenue, SMB and creator monetisation, will lead the combined company's extensive sports business across TV and internet once Gupta leaves.

Gupta highlighted his dedication to growing cricket and called his new position a "privilege" in his opening remarks after his appointment as CEO.

He said, "These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen, and opportunities such as the women's game scale in popularity."

Gupta added, "Cricket's inclusion in the LA28 Olympics and rapid technological advances present game-changing possibilities. I look forward to working closely with ICC Member Boards to expand cricket's global footprint and enhance fan experience.”

According to the ICC, Gupta was chosen after a worldwide search that drew over 2,500 applications from 25 nations. ICC chairman Jay Shah unanimously suggested and accepted a shortlist of 12 after it was compiled and assessed by a nominating committee headed by ICC deputy chair Imran Khwaja and others.

Gupta's nomination was warmly received by ICC Chairman Jay Shah, who described him as a visionary leader whose experience will be essential to the organization's next stage of expansion.

Jay Shah said, "Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC. His deep understanding of global sports, media and entertainment, along with his passion for technology and the cricket fan's perspective, will be essential as we seek to expand cricket's reach-especially with Olympic inclusion on the horizon.”

Gupta began his career as a journalist before joining Star India in 2010 and working his way up to become the company's sports director. In his role as Head of Sports at Disney Star starting in 2020, he greatly increased the popularity of franchises like the IPL, ICC tournaments, and domestic leagues like the ISL and PKL. He also advanced innovations like multilingual broadcasts, digital-first content and women-centric coverage.

Gupta is anticipated to give women's cricket, tech innovation, Olympic alignment and emerging market expansion top priority. His experience in the media can also indicate a change in the way ICC information is presented and distributed around the world, especially in the age of streaming.
