New Delhi (India) May 24: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned about severe to extremely heavy rainfall from Friday to Sunday, and issued a "red alert" for coastal areas in Maharashtra and Goa. The meteorological office says that on May 23, a red alert has been issued for Goa, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. During this time, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and the parts of Pune and Satara are also under an orange alert.

The weather department also predicted very heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.

The IMD says a combination of high moisture, rising temperatures, wind convergence, and a low-pressure area growing over the east-central Arabian Sea is the reason for a sudden rise in rainfall and thunderstorms in this area.

Shubhangi Bhute, Regional Meteorological Centre official said, "The entire Konkan coast has been placed under orange alert, while a red alert has been sounded for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts. During this period, wind speeds will range between 30-40 kmph and may reach up to 60 kmph at some isolated locations.”

Heavy rains also hit Kerala on Friday, which affected normal life in many parts of the state. A red alert was issued by the IMD for three hours in the evening in Thiruvananthapuram because of the possibility of heavy rain and surface winds.

Fishing is not allowed along the coastlines of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep from 24th May to 27th May.

According to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), coastal high waves could reach 3.5 meters on Saturday.

From May 23th to May 29th, the meteorological department has forecasted widespread mild to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and high winds of 40 to 50 kmph over Konkan and Goa.

There is a prediction of severe rainfall in a few areas between May 23 and May 25 of Delhi, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

On May 23, the IMD had warned of extremely heavy rainfall in Raigad and Ratnagiri and issued a red alert.

There is an orange alert for parts of Pune and Satara, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and Mumbai. There are predictions of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and high winds of up to 60 kmph.On May 24, Mumbai is on orange warning.
