India bans all imports direct and indirect from Pakistan amid rising tensions

In the light of deep tensions, India has banned all imports from Pakistan. This decision is made for ensuring and protecting the national security and public policy.

In a strict measure directed at Pakistan, India has prohibited all direct and indirect imports from the bordering nation due to increasing tensions linked to the Pahalgam terror attack. The government stated that the decision applies to all products in transit from Pakistan.

According to a notification issued on May 2 by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the ban is effective immediately.

The DGFT also clarified that any exceptions to this restriction will require prior approval from the Government of India.

Direct or indirect Import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further orders. This restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy. Any exception to this prohibition shall require prior approval of the Government of India," said a notification by the Commerce Ministry.

The Wagah-Attari crossing, the only trade route between India and Pakistan, had already been closed.

Main items of import by India from Pakistan are: Copper and copper articles, Edible fruits and nuts, Cotton, Salt, Sulphur and Earths and Stones, Organic chemicals, Mineral fuels, Plastic products, Wool, Glassware, Raw hides & skin etc.

Trade between India and Pakistan has majorly declined in recent years. According to data from India’s commerce ministry, imports from Pakistan dropped sharply to just $420,000 between April 2024 and January 2025, compared to $2.86 million as compared to the previous year.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has also  imposed a ban on ships sailing with the Pakistani flag from entering Indian ports and has prohibited vessels with an Indian flag from visiting Pakistani ports.

These restrictions, which come into effect immediately, have been established under Section 411 of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958 to protect Indian assets, cargo, and port infrastructure.

The order issued by the ministry stated, “The Act aims to promote the development of an Indian mercantile marine and ensure its effective maintenance in a way that best serves national interests.”

The situation also remains tense at the international borders with Pakistan.
