Indian squad for England series announced; Shubman Gill named Test captain
The Indian team for the tour to England has been announced. The new captain is Shubman Gill.
New Delhi (India) May 24: Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector for the BCCI, has announced the upcoming Test team for the England tour.The Indian cricket team's new captain is Shubman Gill.The new vice captain is Rishabh Pant.
During the press conference, Agarkar announced that Jasprit Bumrah would not be available for all five Test matches. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two senior players of the Indian cricket team have retired from the game's longest format. Agarkar stated that although the squad will miss them, it is an excellent opportunity for others to show off their skills.
Among the prominent figures left out of the squad are Mohammed Shami and batsman Shreyas Iyer. Harshit Rana and Sarfaraz Khan have also been left out of India's team for the England series.
Ajit Agarkar said the reason behind selecting Shubman Gill to lead Team India in Test cricket, "Last year or so we have looked at Shubman for leadership. We are hopeful he is the guy who is going to take the team forward. It is a high pressure job but he is a terrific player. We wish him all the best.”
Ajit Agarkar also explained the reason behind Mohammed Shami's absence from the India selection for the England visit is mainly due to workload management.
He said,“Mohammed Shami is not fit, and he can’t manage his workload in Test cricket at the moment. Shami has been ruled out of the series. The medical team told us that his body was not capable of handling the pressure of red-ball cricket. There is no point in taking a bowler whose fitness is not up to the mark.”
After an outstanding season and winning the Ranji Trophy, Shardur Thakur quickly returned to the team. Karun Nair is also making a comeback in the test team after seven years.India has strengthened their batting lineup by including Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran in the squad.
