New Delhi (India) October 11: Five weeks earlier than normal, after a particularly early surge in cases, Japan has declared the world’s first nationwide influenza epidemic. It has raised worries the virus may be evolving at a faster pace than it was previously.

Memories of Covid-19 Pandemic Resurface in Japan

Many Japanese media outlets have said the outbreak has brought back memories of the pandemic years. It resulted in the closure of dozens of schools and hospitals. Medical experts said the early outbreak and severity of this year’s flu season may not just be a coincidence.

Professor Yoko Tsukamoto, Hokkaido University of Health Sciences said, "This year, the flu season started quite early, but in the changing global environment, this could become a common occurrence.”

She added, "We are seeing greater mobility of people in Japan and around the world. People are carrying the virus to new places, which is another factor helping the virus adapt to new environments.”

Over 4,000 Hospitalized; Schools and Daycares Shut Down

The Japan Health Ministry said, as of October 3, more than 4,000 were hospitalized from influenza. That is four times higher than the prior week. At least 135 childcare facilities and schools in the country have been temporarily closed to try to slow down the spread.

The nationwide average of 1.04 patients per medical facility had exceeded the epidemic threshold, confirmed by the Health Ministry. Outbreaks in Tokyo, Kagoshima and Okinawa have been particularly bad. Yamagata Prefecture closed an entire primary school after 22 of its 36 students tested positive for symptoms similar to those caused by influenza.

Hospitals Report Shortages of Beds and Medical Staff

Now, hospitals across Japan are again struggling with clogged waiting rooms and staff shortages. This is similar to the Covid-19 outbreak years as more patients present for care.

Japan’s health ministry is closely watching the outbreak. In the meantime, officials say the best defenses remain immunization and good personal hygiene.

Government Urges Flexible Policies for Schools and Workplaces

Officials have urged business and schools to consider flexible attendance policies. They have yet to reimpose any meaningful constraints.

Be vaccinated “as soon as possible,” warned public health authorities, because flu cases appear to peak earlier than normal. It is especially for elderly, small children and those with existing diseases.
