Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik: Pakistan’s New Security Advisor
As an extra duty, Lt Gen Malik has assumed the NSA's responsibilities immediately.

Pakistan, May 1: Pakistan's next National Security Adviser (NSA) is Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, who is currently the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). As an extra duty, Lt Gen Malik has assumed the NSA's responsibilities immediately.
In September 2024, he became the ISI head. His appointment follows the Pahalgam terror assault, which killed 26 people, largely tourists, and increased tensions with India.
He is the tenth NSA in the nation, but this is the first time an ISI leader has been assigned to hold both important roles at the same time.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Tuesday, General Malik was formally given the task of the NSA.
Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik HI (M), DG (I), shall hold the additional charge of the National Security Adviser, with immediate effect,” the notification stated.
The assignment coincides with increased tensions with India in the wake of the April 22 terror assault in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
Since the overthrow of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government in April 2022, the NSA post had been unfilled.
At the time, Dr. Moeed Yusuf was the NSA.
