Maharashtra's Push for UNESCO Heritage Status for Shivaji's Forts

India (23 February, 2025): A high-level delegation from Maharashtra, led by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, has traveled to Paris to seek UNESCO World Heritage status for 12 historic forts built under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The initiative, named "Maratha Military Landscape of India," aims to showcase the grandeur of these forts on a global platform.
Why Are These Forts Special?
These forts, including Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohagad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, Khanderi, and Jinji (in Tamil Nadu), played a crucial role in Shivaji Maharaj’s military strategies. They were not just defensive structures but symbols of Maratha power, resilience, and architectural brilliance.
A Vision Supported by Leadership
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Maharashtra government has put forth this proposal to UNESCO. Shelar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the initiative, stating that achieving UNESCO status would boost global awareness about Maharashtra’s rich heritage.
Delegation’s Role in Paris
The four-member delegation, including Vikas Kharge (Additional Chief Secretary), Hemant Dalvi (Deputy Director of Archaeology and Museums), and architect Shikha Jain, will remain in Paris until February 26. Their mission is to present a compelling case through technical and diplomatic discussions, highlighting the historical and architectural significance of these forts.
