Martial Law Scandal: Kim Yong-hyun’s Role and Consequences

The well-known South Korean military leader and former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun finds himself at the center of controversy and legal battles because of his suspected role in an effort to impose martial law under President Yoon Suk Yeol.

A Military Career of Distinction

Born in Masan in 1959, Kim Yong-hyun joined the Korea Military Academy in 1978 and went on to have an illustrious military career. He ascended through the ranks, serving in important roles like chief of operations and capital defence commander at the Joint Chiefs of Staff until retiring as a three-star general in 2017. He gained notoriety for his leadership and knowledge, which helped him land later political positions under President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Close Ties with President Yoon Suk Yeol

Kim's relationship with President Yoon dates back to their shared time at Chungam High School in Seoul. This connection fostered a deep trust, placing Kim within the president’s inner circle, often referred to as the "Chungam faction." When Yoon nominated him for the role of defense minister in August 2023, the decision was lauded for Kim's ability to "understand the commander-in-chief's intentions better than anyone else."

Hardline Stance on Security Issues

As defense minister, Kim adopted a firm stance against North Korea. In his inaugural speech, he warned that North Korea's regime "would pay a 'horrendous price' and ultimately see its end" if it engaged in provocations. This rhetoric underlined his uncompromising approach to national security during his tenure.

Role in the Martial Law Attempt

Kim's involvement in the martial law controversy has overshadowed his achievements. On December 1, he allegedly ordered troop deployments to seize control of six strategic locations, including the parliament and opposition party headquarters. These actions culminated in President Yoon’s late-night martial law declaration on December 3, which Kim reportedly recommended during an impromptu cabinet meeting. Despite prior denials of such plans, his actions now face intense scrutiny.

Detention and Suicide Attempt

Kim stepped down following accusations of insurrection and abuse of power. Detained since Sunday, he attempted suicide at a detention center using a shirt and underwear. While his condition is reportedly stable, this incident has intensified public attention on the crisis. Through his lawyer, Kim apologized for "causing anxiety and inconvenience to the people," taking full responsibility for the events.

What Lies Ahead

With ongoing criminal investigations and public outcry, Kim faces an uncertain future. His once-illustrious career and close political alliances now stand in stark contrast to the legal and personal challenges that have engulfed his life.

"From a decorated general to a figure mired in scandal, Kim Yong-hyun's story reflects the volatility of political power."
