The Kerala Assembly on Thursday spoke out for the victims of a deadly fire that killed 21 people at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area. The deadly tragedy which started the day before took the nation by surprise and brought on widespread grief in both political and public opinion. As the Assembly opened for its hearing, Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan expressed profound grief at the loss of life and gave his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Thiruvanchoor informed the House that among the 21 people who lost their lives, 12 were foreign nationals. The Speaker continued that the Assembly was unified in mourning for the fallen victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those who were injured in the incident. As tribute to the dead, legislators all across the aisle stood in silence for a brief period.
What Happened With the Delhi Fire Disaster?
The deadly blaze occurred at Flourish Stay B&B located in Hauz Rani, Malviya Nagar, South Delhi. The fire started around 8:30 am, and soon engulfed the five-storey building, according to officials. The building itself imposed many difficulties for rescue teams. According to reports, the property contained only one entry and exit point, sealed windows and a sensor-driven main door. Many occupants, a description has it, suffered from the conditions that kept them indoors, such that escape was difficult, turning the area inside into a fatal snare. According to reports, some guests reportedly slept when the fire erupted and had no time to respond. And the quick spread of smoke and flames complicated rescue efforts further.
Quick action by emergency responders caused rescue of at least 58 individuals from the burning building. The rescued survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Despite great rescue work, however, 21 people were confirmed dead. Officials confirmed that the victims were both Indian nationals and foreigners. There were nine Indian nationals among the deceased, eight of whom were an extended family. The foreign victims were mostly from Central Asian and African countries. Some of the foreign nationals were also found to have stayed at the hotel while attending to family members receiving treatment at another hospital nearby, authorities added.
