Court Grants 4-Day Remand
Chib had been detained after about 15 hours of questioning at the Tilak Marg police station linked to the shirtless protest at the AI meet. Police sources say Chib refused to cooperate and tried to mislead investigators during questioning.
They say they have enough evidence against him. At 10 a.m., Delhi Police produced its Youth Congress chief before Patiala House Court and secured a police remand for four days.
Charges Under BNS Sections
Describing him as the “mastermind,” the police told the court that people from across the country were involved and that he needs to be taken to various locations in the investigation.
A case has been registered against Chib under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 191, 191 (1), and 192, which pertain to rioting, criminal conspiracy, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty, obstructing a public servant in discharge of official functions, and wilful disobedience of lawful orders.
Probe into Nationwide Plot
Sources said that extensive questioning of Uday Bhanu will be required which means he should be taken into custody for interrogation. The case is not a routine protest, they said, but instead is being reviewed as part of a concerted attempt to discredit India’s reputation before global top officials arriving at the AI Impact Summit.
The protest case has since been transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, with the Inter-State Cell (ISC) conducting investigations that generally cover those dealing with multi-state coordination or organised networks.
Money Trail and T-Shirt Slogans
A group of IYC workers staged a protest at the summit venue in Hall No. 5 of the summit on Friday by pulling off their shirts to expose T-shirts that had slogans printed on them against the government and the India-US interim trade deal before security personnel whisked them away from the venue.
The police said the accused registered online to gain access to the venue using QR codes. Investigators are also digging into an alleged conspiracy angle and the financial pipeline that led to the protest, which included money to print the slogans on the T-shirts.
