Pakistan's Ex-ISI Chief Faiz Hameed Sentenced to 14 Years in Rare Military Court Martial for Political Abuses
The Pakistan Army stated that a military tribunal has sentenced the ex-director general of the country’s strong intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to fourteen years in prison for violating state secret laws, abusing his authority, and other related offenses. This ruling was announced by the Pakistan Army on December 11, 2025.
New Delhi (India) December 11: The Pakistani Military courts sentenced Faiz Hameed (a retired ISI Director General) to 14 years in prison for numerous offenses—engaging in political involvement as well as not following the Official Secrets Act—following a 15 month-long court martial.
In addition to being a supporter of former Prime Minister Imran Khan (who now sits in Jail), Faiz Hameed was also found guilty of causing “wrongful losses” to individuals through political activities, according to a statement from the Army.
Military Tribunal Verdict and Charges
The Pakistani Army issued a statement (ISPR) about the length of the ongoing court martial process that has gone on for 15 months as of August 12, 2024, based on the Pakistan Army Act.
The Army said, “After lengthy and laborious legal proceedings, the accused has been found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment by the Court, which has been promulgated on 11 December 2025."
"Involvement of the convict in fomenting vested political agitation and instability in cohorts with political elements and in certain other matters is separately being dealt with," the army added.
Abuse of Power and Illegal Activities
According to Supreme Court documents published in 2023, he also received accusations of abusing his power and illegally conducting an unlicensed raid against the commercial premises of a Benami real estate developer.
The army says that the details of the court martial proceedings are private because of the courtroom being behind closed doors.
Most believed that this could refer to a possible connection between Hameed and the unrest caused by the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.
Political Involvement and Imran Khan Connection
Faiz Hameed took an early retirement shortly after Khan was replaced in 2022 due to a vote of no-confidence. This is the first such military court martial of the ISI Chief in Pakistan.
He was charged with “multiple violations” of the Pakistan Army Act and stripped of all military ranks.
Faiz Hameed held strong ties with the Afghan Taliban and, shortly following their return to power in August 2021, he offered assurances they’d succeed during their return to power.
Impact on Pakistan’s Military and Intelligence Leadership
Faiz Hameed, formerly ranked as a Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) in the Pakistan Army, served as Director-General of Pakistan's infamous Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from 2019-2021, then retired prematurely on December 10, 2022, after serving as Commander of XXXI Corps.
The sentence handed down to Hameed marks a rare event of a high-ranking former military officer receiving such an imposing punishment in a country where the military is a significant institution and prosecution of top-level personnel are rare.
