Reddit Down for Thousands in the US: Second Outage in 24 Hours

US, November 21: On Thursday, Reddit, one of the most popular social news platforms, experienced an unexpected outage, leaving thousands of users in the United States unable to access the site. According to Downdetector.com, more than 70,000 users reported issues with the platform, which included problems accessing both the website and the mobile app.

India's Experience with the Outage

While the impact in India was relatively smaller, around 700 users reported disruptions in accessing Reddit. The majority of the complaints, 53%, were related to the website, while 38% of users reported issues with the app. For many, Reddit’s iconic error page became a frustratingly familiar sight.

Reddit’s Response to the Glitch

This outage followed closely on the heels of another disruption just a day earlier. Reddit had rolled out an update to address a software bug, which initially seemed to solve the problem. However, the platform faced a fresh round of glitches within 24 hours, leaving users once again unable to connect. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Reddit acknowledged the issue and assured users that they were investigating the problem.

The Scale of the Outages

Reports from the United States showed that 52% of the issues stemmed from the website, while 46% were app-related. Users faced various levels of difficulty, ranging from slow loading times to a complete inability to access content.

A Look at Reddit's Role in Modern Internet

Reddit, often called the "front page of the internet," is a hub for communities, discussions, and trending topics. Its history dates back to 2005, when it was launched as a space for users to share and discuss content. Over the years, it has grown into a platform that hosts niche communities and serves as a pulse for global conversations.

Why Two Outages in Such a Short Time?

Reddit attributed the first outage to a bug in their latest update, which they claimed to have fixed. The second outage, however, raised questions about whether the initial fix had unforeseen side effects. As of now, the company has not provided a specific explanation for the back-to-back glitches.

What's Next for Reddit?

Reddit has reassured its users that the issue is being addressed. However, back-to-back outages might push the company to rethink its update process and ensure better stability for its platform. In the world of fast-paced internet, even a moment of downtime can feel like an eternity.
