New Delhi (India) November 20: On Thursday, the State Investigation Agency (SIA) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out searches against the Jammu office of the Kashmir Times alleging one case of “anti-national activities”.

SIA searches newspaper premises, seizes digital devices and ammunition for probe

Officials said personnel were checking a huge number of details in the premises of the newspaper, looking at data and digital devices and computer systems in particular. During the operation, researchers have been intelligent enough to have recovered AK-series rifle cartridges, pistol rounds and other things, which have been taken into custody for further investigation.

J&K police said it has registered a case against the English publication, which is being edited by Anuradha Bhasin Jamwal, for getting involved in anti-national activities; for attempts to spread disaffection among people against the country; and peddling separatist propaganda.

An official said the searches were conducted after a case was registered against both the publications and people connected with it.

Editors call allegations intimidation

Prabodh Jamwal and Anuradha Bhasin, senior editors of the Kashmir Times, on 23 September 2025. They said the charges made against them were meant to intimidate, to delegitimize and in the end to obscure.

The joint statement said, “We will not be silenced. We are being targeted precisely because we continue to do our work. In an era when critical voices are increasingly scarce, we remain one of the few independent outlets willing to speak truth to power.”

“Since 1954, the Kashmir Times, whose founding editor was Ved Bhasin, has stood as a pillar of independent journalism. We have chronicled the region’s triumphs and failures with equal rigour. We have given voice to communities that would otherwise go unheard. We have asked difficult questions when others remained silent,” the statement added.

In August 2019 for submitting a petition to the Supreme Court, Kashmir Times editor Anuradha Bhasin had also received intense public attention due to her stance against the communication restrictions that followed Jammu and Kashmir's abrogation of Article 370.

Political voices urge due process, condemn pressure on critical media outlets

Surinder Singh Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir stated authorities should not act under any pressure before charges are proved and caught red- handed when it comes to such things as where due process of law has taken place or not.

He said, "If they have done something wrong, then action should be taken. If they have done wrong, they will face the consequences. But it should not be done just to pressurise. If you do it only to pressurise, then that will be wrong."

Iltija Mufti, a PDP leader and the daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, has spoken out against the media house's tabulation and repression.

She posted, “Kashmir Times is one of those rare newspapers in Kashmir that not only spoke truth to power but refused to bend or buckle under pressure & intimidation. Raiding their offices under the guise of carrying out anti national activities is preposterous & reeks of high handedness. In Kashmir every outlet of truth is being choked by invoking the anti national slur. Are we all anti nationals?” on social media platform X.
