Delhi Police Opposes Bail Pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam in 2020 Delhi Riots Case
On Thursday, the Delhi Police opposed the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, along with other accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case before Supreme Court, contending that the most dangerous case of people involved in terrorism being more dangerous to society than those on ground.
New Delhi (India) November 20: In its opposition to bail petitions filed by activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam--among others who have been charged with being the brains behind last year's riots in Delhi (2020)--Delhi Police cited two recent cases to make their case.
Delhi Police Claims Intellectuals Like Khalid, Imam More Dangerous than On Ground Rioters
ASG Raju of Additional Solicitor General was speaking for the Delhi Police's claim and went as far as to say that a new trend has emerged in business whereby through state funding it is possible for intellectuals to become doctors etcetera and then unleash anti-national activities.
Strongly opposing the bail applications of the activists, the ASG said that when the intellectuals become terrorists they are much more dangerous than those who are at it on fire and faggot.
ASG Raju Highlights Anti-National Activities by Professionals
Arguing for Delhi Police, Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju said that doctors and engineers are devolving away from their professional practices today to engage in anti-national activities. ASG Raju said that, for the purpose of obtaining a farmers' movement, Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid broke JNU's secure fabric and bent upon the students of Jamia as his advisors.
A videotape was played during the hearing of the Court and Mr. Raju said that Mr. Imam incited people to riot. Judge Kumar asked the ASG to address proof in the trial to examine merits of the bail pleas, Mr. Raju said no accused had sought bail on the merits.
Video Evidence Cited Showing Sharjeel Imam's Inflammatory Speeches Against CAA
In addition, the ASG played a video from their ipod showing Sharjeel Imam giving "inflammatory speeches" against the CAA before the bill was on the point of being passed. The CAA provides Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities who have fled Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
Allegations Against Activists Include Attempts at Regime Change and Economic Sabotage
The ASG told the Supreme Court that these people earlier prevented medical supplies from reaching Delhi and gained control of the economy. They want to control Assam, using the 'chicken's neck', that strip of inter-state territory across the northeastern mountain region which links India with its eastern part but also leads into South China Sea." He went on to say that their bigger aim is regime change
“The Separation of Assam from India, choke Delhi and Assam of essential supplies, deliberately depriving the country of economic essentials is also part of UAPA, abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir, Babri Masjid, triple talaq are some of the issues his speeches are on,” he said.
Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, representing the petitioners, argued that only a small section of the speeches are being played to be prejudicial. J. Kumar asserts whether 'micro' or 'macro' section, those are fragments of speeches which appear in the chargesheet.
