Yamuna River Crosses Danger Mark, Heavy Rains Trigger Flood Risk in Delhi-NCR; Schools Shut, Traffic Chaos in Gurugram
The Yamuna River crosses the danger level of 205.33 meters early Tuesday. It puts Delhi at greater risk of flooding. Officials warn that levels could rise to 206.50 meters by the evening. Meanwhile, more than 100 mm of rain fell in Gurugram.

Yamuna Water Levels Rise Beyond 205.33 Meters
Early Tuesday morning, Delhi's low-lying areas, particularly those along the Yamuna River's banks, were placed on notice. This is after the river crossed the 205.33-meter danger level. Officials caution that since nearby barrages are continuously releasing water, flood levels could increase even further.
The Hathnikund barrage in Haryana is releasing large amounts of water every hour. It increases the risk of flooding in the capital's low-lying areas. According to officials, an alert has been issued for those areas of risk.
Loha Pul Closed as Water Levels Continue to Surge
The Loha Pul is popularly known as the Old Iron Bridge. It would remain closed from 4 pm until further notice due to rising water levels in the Yamuna. The Delhi traffic police said in a warning on Tuesday that the bridge had crossed its danger mark of 205.33 meters.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta writes, "Today, I inspected the relief camp near Geeta Colony Flyover and the Old Iron Bridge. I met with the affected families, listened to their problems, and assured them that the Delhi government is with them at every step. The safety and convenience of citizens is our topmost priority, and every possible assistance is being ensured” in a post on social media platform X.
Schools Shut, Work-from-Home Advisory Issued Across NCR
Gurugram was the talk of social media on Monday night. It is due to images of a "20-kilometer" traffic delay. All the offices and schools were closed on Tuesday. Authorities have urged students and employees to take online classes and work from home.
Ajay Kumar is the district magistrate-cum-chairperson, district disaster management authority (DDMA). He said, "In view of the forecast, all corporate offices and private institutions in the district are advised to guide their employees to work from home; and all schools in the district are advised to conduct online classes on 02-09-2025".
School holidays have been announced for tomorrow in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and other parts of Punjab. This is due to the heavy rainfall and the current weather. This preventive measure has been implemented by the authorities to protect students and decrease the problems brought on by the rain.
IMD Predicts Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall in Northwest India
The IMD warns in a detailed statement on Tuesday that a heavy to very heavy rainfall period is expected to continue throughout Northwest India for the next two days. There will be a few cases of extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
According to IMD, the rain activity is caused by the development of a "low pressure area" over the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify over the same area over the course of the next day.
