Deadly Fire at Arpora Club Near Baga Beach Kills 25; Investigation and Support Underway

At least 25 people (most of whom worked at the nightclub) died after a massive fire tore through a very large and popular nightclub in North Goa late Saturday night. The fire resulted from an explosion of a gas cylinder, according to officials.

New Delhi (India) December 7: Over the weekend, a large fire broke out at a club in Arpora in North Goa and bounded by Baga Beach near Birch. The explosion, said to have occurred shortly after midnight, and had been thought to start with the explosion of a cylinder, at least 25 people were killed. Some fire department teams had gotten out on the scene, and rescue work continued until early Sunday morning.

Goa CM Orders Full Inquiry, Promises Strict Action

The site of the tragedy was visited by Goa‘s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant early Sunday morning, and he expressed great grief about the incident. He said there will be a complete investigation into the cause of the fire.

"Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people. I am deeply grieved and offer my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families in this hour of unimaginable loss. I visited the incident site and have ordered an inquiry into this incident. The inquiry will examine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building rules were followed. Those found responsible will face the most stringent action under the law- any negligence will be dealt with firmly," he posted on social media platform X.

PM Modi Offers Support and Announces Financial Aid to Victims’ Families

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief about the incident.

Modi wrote, “The fire mishap in Arpora, Goa is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest” in a post on X.

The PM has said he spoke with the Chief Minister and has promised to provide complete support to the State of Goa and the families of those affected.

The PMO said, “An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Arpora, Goa. The injured would be given₹50,000,” in a separate statement.

Rescue Efforts Continue

The state police have stated the fire was caused by a cylinder explosion shortly after midnight on Sunday, December 7, 2025; this was in contrast to witnesses' statements which allege that the fire started on the first floor where tourists had gathered to dance.

The Government of Goa's administration created dedicated lines for family, tourist, and citizen requests, which will speed up and expedite the coordination of responses from the government; improve communication with those seeking help, and provide clear pathways for journalists.

The North Goa District Disaster Management Authority has created two emergency telephone numbers on which individuals may contact either the District Control Room located in the North Goa Collectorate (0832-2225383) or the Goa State Police Control Room (7875756000) to report emergencies or request assistance at any time of day.
