Gujarat Cabinet Overhaul: All Ministers Resign, Bhupendra Patel to Announce New Team Ahead of 2027 Polls
A cabinet change is scheduled for Friday at Gandhinagar's Mahatma Mandir. This is after the resignation of sixteen Gujarati ministers to chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday.
New Delhi (India) October 16: All of the Gujarat government's ministers have resigned in a broad political reset, ahead of Friday's significant cabinet change. It is anticipated that seven to ten ministers will be kept, with fresh candidates filling the other posts.
Move Linked to 2027 Assembly and Local Body Elections
The action was taken after Chief Minister Patel and Sunil Bansal, the national general secretary (organization) of the BJP, met at the chief minister's home on Thursday night. Bansal and Patel reportedly visited with each minister separately to advise them of the central leadership's decision before collecting their resignations.
The rearrangement is seen as a component of the BJP's larger plan to revive the party and balance regional and caste representation in the run-up to the 2027 Assembly elections and the next municipal elections.
Fresh Faces Expected in 22–23 Member Cabinet
According to a BJP leader, Patel's new team would consist of roughly 22–23 ministers. This team would only include four or five of the departing team's ministers.
This is the first significant cabinet change since the BJP won a victory in the 2022 state elections under Bhupendra Patel. He took over as chief minister in 2021 from Vijay Rupani.
According to a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, the ministers were instructed to resign by the afternoon. This was done so that the chief minister and the party leadership could implement a "strategic reset" before the 2027 assembly and local body elections.
Sixteen Ministers Step Down in Political Reset
There were two ministers of state (independent charge), six ministers of state, and eight cabinet-rank ministers on the departing council of ministers.
According to reports, the governor will not receive the resignations of those being re-inducted.
Oath Ceremony Scheduled with Top BJP Leaders Present
It is anticipated that Patel will swear in his new council of ministers on Friday at approximately noon. BJP President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also be present at Friday's oath ceremony. They have instructed all BJP MLAs to stay in Gandhinagar.
The ministers met with the chief minister after their resignation. Patel has been in charge of the state since September 2021.
