IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi NCR: heavy rainfall and thunderstorms predicted

New Delhi (India) June 23: On Monday June 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad. The warning warns of thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall.

The national capital is predicted by IMD to have light to moderate rainfall throughout the day, with wind speeds of between 30 and 40 kmph.

The meteorological service has predicted that these circumstances would continue for the following two days, June 24 and 25. The forecast for Tuesday calls for several rounds of showers in various areas of Delhi.

Despite Sunday's cloudy sky, Delhi did not get any rain till the evening. The day's maximum temperature was 36.2°C which was two degrees colder than usual.

The humidity levels were still high and ranged from 65 to 83 percent, which caused a great deal of heat discomfort. IMD data indicates that at 5:30 pm, Delhi's heat index, or "real feel" temperature, hit 47.5°C, mostly as a result of a 70% relative humidity.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi's air quality stayed in the "satisfactory" category on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reading 98 at 4 p.m. Anything below 50 is categorized as good, and an AQI between 51 and 100 is deemed satisfactory.

In the coming two days, the southwest monsoon is expected to make its way to Delhi, Chandigarh and parts of Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The IMD said, "The southwest monsoon has advanced further over most parts of Himachal Pradesh, the entire Ladakh and Kashmir, most parts of Jammu, and some parts of Punjab. Conditions are favourable for the Southwest monsoon to advance further over the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, some more parts of Rajasthan and Punjab, some parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, and the remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu during the next two days” regarding the weather updates.

A yellow notice has also been issued for Delhi's neighbouring cities of Gurgaon and Faridabad. There will likely be thunderstorms and lightning throughout the day in these areas of Delhi NCR, along with heavy rains.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted by the IMD for northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, the Konkan, and Goa regions through June 26. Madhya Pradesh is projected to get particularly high rainfall on June 23 and 24.
