Background on Tejas LCA and Previous Crash Incident
The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Tejas was envisioned in 1984. The indigenous single engine 4.5 generation multi-role fighter was given the name of ‘Tejas’ by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in May 2003.
This is only the second LCA crash ever recorded. Earlier, on March 12, 204, a single-seat Tejas fighter plane crashed near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan after the top secret tri-services exercise which highlighted India's march toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The pilot was able to eject safely.
Before crashing, the LCA Mk-1 had been participating in the Pokhran firing range near Jaisalmer with another Tejas aircraft in the Bharat Shakti tri-services exercise.
