Indian Government Caps Airfares Amid IndiGo Flight Cancellations; Northern Railway Boosts Train Services for Affected Passengers

The Indian government announced a cap on all airfares so that increased demand for air travel caused by the grounding of IndiGo's fleet could be controlled. As a result of the breakdown of IndiGo's flight services on Friday, many travellers have chosen to make alternate travel plans, rather than waiting for IndiGo to resume services.

New Delhi (India) December 6: Due to the disruption of service by some private carriers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has established a limit on airfare in order to reduce the increase of airfare as a result of the disruption on Saturday, December 6, 2025. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has mandated that IndiGo must complete 100% of its customer refunds by 8:00 PM on December 7, 2025.

Ministry of Civil Aviation Imposes Airfare Limits

All airlines are required to follow the government's instructions regarding the amount of tariff that they can charge; these guidelines are intended to protect passengers in need from predatory pricing and to create an environment in which the general public can book flights without incurring excessive costs or inconvenience.

The Ministry said, “These caps will remain in force until the situation fully stabilises. The objective of this directive is to maintain pricing discipline in the market, prevent any exploitation of passengers in distress, and ensure that citizens who urgently need to travel — including senior citizens, students, and patients — are not subjected to financial hardship during this period,” in a statement.

Government Monitoring to Safeguard Passenger Rights

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), with the help of the information collected from Airlines, OTAs, and Travel Agencies, will be able to track airlines’ Fares and to impose penalties as appropriate, when it is determined that any airline charges a higher fare than is allowed.

As of December 6, 2025, IndiGo has cancelled over 400 flights from four major Airports in India. IndiGo has cancelled (in total) more than 400 flights, with 124 flights from Bengaluru Airport (63 departing and 61 arriving) and 109 flights from Mumbai Airport (51 departing and 58 arriving).

Northern Railway Adds Coaches and Special Trains to Meet Increased Demand

To provide relief to passengers affected by the widespread cancellations of IndiGo flights across the country, Northern Railway will implement various measures. These will include the addition of additional coaches to many of the Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains operated by Northern Railway, and the operation of special trains to the most popular destinations: Sabarmati, Mumbai, Howrah, Patna, Darbhanga, and Thiruvananthapuram.

According to Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, the railway has increased the number of coaches attached to peak period Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains to correspond with the increase in demand for train travel.
