New Delhi (India) December 29: JUP (Janata Unnayan Party) chairperson Humayun Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, has been detained for assaulting an on-duty policeman. A case was also registered against Azad based on a complaint by the constable who was tasked with Kabir’s security.

Constable Alleges Assault by MLA and Son

This Sunday morning a constable on duty alleged that he had been attacked by Trinamool’s suspended Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir and his son Golam Nabi Azad, a Trinamool leader and karmadhakshya of Beldanga-II panchayat samiti.

On Khan’s complaint, Golam was detained by police for interrogation. He was released after interrogation in the evening. The move has set off a new fight with the ruling party, which suspended him from the party on December 4.

Kabir Blames TMC for Police Harassment

Kabir claims that he was being targeted by the police following the instructions of Trinamool Congress. A police force cannot cordon the house of an elected representative under "flimsy pretext", MLA said.

"My son objected to the entry of a policeman inside my house today and this angered the law enforcers who levelled false allegations against my son, accusing him of misbehaviour," he said.

"I will gherao the SP's office in Murshidabad on January 1 in protest against this harassment, which is politically motivated. I demand an explanation from senior police and administration officials about today's incident. They cannot intimidate me," he added.

CCTV Seizure and Forensic Analysis Underway

According to the police department, Azad had been taken to Saktipur police station and interrogated till evening, and CCTV footage from the MLA’s surroundings was sourced and scrutinized to confirm the events occurred. The police seized the server and also called for digital forensic experts in Calcutta to retrieve information.

“As the footage could not be accessed, the entire DVR and storage devices will be sent to the Cyber Forensic Laboratory for examination,” police said.

The police charged the father and son with voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, creating hindrances in the discharge of duties of a public servant, assault and criminal intimidation — the provisions under the BNSS.

JUP Launch and Mosque Controversy

This initiative follows the launch of the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) by Humayun Kabir, who was suspended from the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress.

Kabir created a major controversy by announcing a plan to build a Babri Masjid style mosque in Murshidabad district of West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections next year. On December 6, he also laid the foundation stone for the mosque in Beldanga, which was the day that coincided with the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya.
