Poor hydration, junk food, excessive screen time and genetics may be putting children at risk. Here are the warning signs parents should watch for.

Kidney stones in children are becoming a problem. This is because of things like not drinking water eating junk food being overweight and genetics. These things can increase the risk of kidney stones in children.

Here are the warning signs that parents should not ignore. Kidney stones used to be a problem that only adults had to deal with.. Now doctors are seeing more and more cases of kidney stones in children and teenagers.

According to Dr Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, a lot more children are getting kidney stones now than they were twenty years ago. Most of these cases are because of calcium oxalate stones which're the same kind of stones that adults get.

So why are children getting kidney stones? There are reasons for this. Dr Balakrishnan says that some of the reasons are:

1. Not Drinking Enough Water

Many children do not drink water during the day. They might drink drinks or soft drinks instead. When it is hot outside not drinking water can cause dehydration and make the urine very concentrated. This can cause crystals and stones to form.

If children drink water especially when they are at school or playing sports it can really help prevent kidney stones.

2. Eating junk food and much salt.

The kind of food we eat today is not very good for us. We eat a lot of processed snacks and fast food which're high in salt. When we eat much salt it can cause more calcium to come out in our urine. This can help form stones. Drinks that are high in sugar can also affect the things in our urine that are linked to kidney stones.

So if we eat processed food and less salt it can really help our kidneys.

3. Spending much time on screens and not being active enough.

Children today spend a lot of time on their phones and computers. They do not get exercise. When we do not exercise and we eat much it can cause obesity and other problems.

Dr Balakrishnan says that these kinds of lifestyle habits are linked to kidney stones in children.

4. Family. Genetics.

Genetics can also play a role in kidney stones. If someone in your family has had kidney stones you might be more likely to get them. Some genetic conditions can also cause kidney stones.

Sometimes the way we live and our genetics can work together to increase the risk of kidney stones.

Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore

Children may not always be able to clearly explain what they are feeling. Parents should therefore watch for symptoms such as:

  • Repeated stomach or side pain
  • Pain or burning while urinating
  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Vomiting along with severe pain
  • Unusual irritability in younger children

These symptoms do not always mean a child has kidney stones, but persistent or severe symptoms should be medically evaluated.

Why Early Detection Matters

Kidney stones can be extremely painful. According to Dr Balakrishnan, early-onset stone disease may also carry a higher lifetime risk of recurrence.

If left untreated, stones can sometimes lead to repeated infections, blockage in the urinary tract and potential kidney damage. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical care are therefore important.

How Can Parents Help Prevent Kidney Stones?

Many cases may be preventable with healthier daily habits. Dr Balakrishnan recommends focusing on:

  • Encouraging children to drink enough water
  • Reducing excess salt intake
  • Limiting processed and junk food
  • Cutting down on sugary drinks
  • Promoting regular physical activity
  • Ensuring a balanced calcium intake

One important point is that parents should not automatically reduce calcium from a child's diet without medical advice. Adequate dietary calcium is important, and unnecessarily restricting it may not prevent certain types of kidney stones.

The rise in kidney stones among children is a reminder that everyday habits matter. More water, healthier food and regular physical activity could go a long way in supporting children's overall health and reducing preventable risks.
