India's Diplomacy Secures Energy Lifeline from Iran
Jaishankar reached out to Araghchi on March 10 amidst escalating conflicts in the Middle East. During their conversation, the two leaders engaged in a comprehensive dialogue about the ongoing situation and expressed their commitment to collaborate for peace.
This recent discussion marked the third conversation between them in just two weeks. Their initial talks took place on February 28, followed by another on March 5, leading up to this latest interaction.
Tehran Closes Strait to Enemy Vessels
The backdrop to these negotiations includes the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, now entering its 13th day, with no signs of easing. The conflict has severely impacted maritime traffic in the region, causing a significant spike in global oil prices.
In response, Tehran has tightened its control over vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that only ships not aligned with American or Israeli interests would be allowed safe passage.
Strait of Hormuz Trade Role
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow channel that separates Iran from Oman, is just 55 kilometers wide and serves as a crucial artery for global trade, with a substantial portion of the world’s crude oil and natural gas traversing this route. Any long-term disruptions could pose serious risks to global energy markets.
Khamenei's Death Spark Fears of Wider Conflict
Earlier this month, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that the Strait had effectively been closed to shipping and issued a warning that any vessel entering the area could face targeted attacks.
Tensions have been further heightened following reports of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei being killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike.
