Registry Scam in Rae Bareli: Man Fakes Dead Farmer to Sell Land
The man who posed as Hazari was identified as Harinam Singh from nearby Gudha village. In March 2025, he managed to register the land in the names of two buyers.

Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 13: In a shocking case from Rae Bareli’s Shivgarh block, an elderly man faked identity of a dead farmer named Hazari and sold land worth lakhs. A stranger claims to be grandfather and sells his land. The land, measuring around two bighas and four biswas, belonged to Uma Shankar’s grandfather, who died nearly 50 years ago. Trouble started when Shankar noticed some unknown people trying to claim the land earlier this month.
Land Registry Shock for the Real Family
The family of the deceased farmer was unaware that their ancestral land was sold off secretly. Uma Shankar, a resident of Bedharu village, rushed to the district magistrate and police after learning about the fraud. The incident raised questions on how such a big mistake was allowed in land registry. The official records never flagged that Hazari had passed away decades ago.
Old Man Becomes ‘Hazari’ and Fools Everyone
The man who posed as Hazari was identified as Harinam Singh from nearby Gudha village. In March 2025, he managed to register the land in the names of two buyers. The local police believe that not just Harinam but also the buyers and witnesses were part of the scam. This case shows how simple paper frauds can create big family and legal problems.
Land Value Might Be the Reason Behind the Crime
The price of land in Rae Bareli has increased over the years, making even small plots valuable. According to Inspector Vindhya Vinay, this could be the main reason behind the forgery. The fake Hazari and the buyers might have thought they would earn a good amount from this silent deal. However, when new owners came to take possession, the family raised alarm.
Verification of Old Records Now Underway
Now, police have started a full investigation into the case. They have asked Uma Shankar to provide documents proving his grandfather’s death. The matter is also being looked into by the land revenue department to verify ownership and registry history. Officials have assured that proper action will be taken once facts are confirmed. This case has reminded everyone to stay alert about land records and registry.
