India's Bad Start and No Comeback
India’s top and middle order crumbled early: Abhishek Sharma scored 15, and Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan were dismissed cheaply in the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav and the middle order faltered and failed to form partnerships by collapsing at crucial moments, while Shivam Dube alone scored a valiant 42. Jasprit Bumrah gave a masterclass in the closing overs, conceding very little as he finished with brilliant figures of 3 for 15.
Super 8 Group Pressure
As is the case every time India is not feeling like it’s coming out strong enough to face something huge, the Super 8 campaign at ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 starts with a heavyweight clash against South Africa, on Sunday at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. It is the first game of the Super 8 phase for both sides and in a group where net run rate may prove critical, early momentum is key.
And this is no ordinary Super 8 group — two undefeated group toppers are West Indies and Zimbabwe too, which quickly made this the tournament’s most difficult pool.
SKY's Post Match Statement
Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav said, “I feel we were always in the game when we started. I think we bowled really well in the beginning, 21 for 3, and the way they batted after that from 7 to 15, I think they batted really well, and then we came back again in the game later on. Overall, if we see, we bowled really well, but we could have batted a little better. My thing is sometimes you’ve got to think, if you’re chasing 180-185, you can’t win the game in the powerplay, but you might lose the game in the powerplay. We lost too many wickets in the powerplay and then we couldn’t have small, small partnerships which we wanted for chasing 180-185, but that’s part of the game. We learn from it, we’ll sit back and then come back stronger” regarding the loss.
“That’s it. We’ll try and keep it simple, play the same brand of cricket which we want to play and nothing changes. I think we’ll come back strong” he added.
