Sonam Wangchuk Fast Day 19: HC Orders Daily Health Checks

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike entered its 19th day on Thursday, as fears about his health escalated. As Wangchuk's case was heard by the Delhi High Court, the court directed the authorities to monitor his health every day, observing that every human life is precious.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has announced a one-day mass hunger strike in support of Wangchuk and students demanding education reforms across the country.

Sonam Wangchuk Says He Will Continue His Fast

Despite repeated appeals from political leaders, doctors, and supporters, Sonam Wangchuk has made it clear that he will not end his hunger strike.

In a video message, Wangchuk asked people not to worry about him, saying his medical reports show that he can continue fasting for a few more days.

“I’m not in a state that I would die in two to four days,” Wangchuk said.

He acknowledged that he has lost muscle mass but said his heart and other vital organs are functioning normally. He also stated that his medical reports remain stable.

Wangchuk urged supporters not to ask him to end his fast. Instead, he appealed to them to join a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20.

“Instead of telling me to stop my fast, please join me on July 20 to peacefully march to Parliament,” he said.

Latest Health Update

Doctors treating Wangchuk said he remains very weak and continues to receive 24-hour medical supervision.

According to the latest health update:

  • Current Weight: 57.15 kg
  • Total Weight Loss: 8.9 kg since the hunger strike began
  • Weight Lost in Last 24 Hours: 400 grams
  • Blood Pressure: 105/76 mmHg
  • Blood Sugar: 80 mg/dL
  • Oxygen Saturation: 97%
  • Hydration Levels: Reportedly stable

Doctors continue to monitor his condition closely as the hunger strike enters its third week.

Nationwide Hunger Strike Called by CJP

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), led by Abhijeet Dipke, has organised a one-day nationwide hunger strike on July 16 in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk and students demanding reforms in India's education system.

The party has appealed to citizens across the country to participate peacefully and support the movement.

Political Leaders Extend Support

Several political leaders are expected to visit Jantar Mantar on Thursday to express solidarity with Wangchuk.

Saurabh Bharadwaj

Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj announced that he would visit Jantar Mantar at 4 PM and urged people to join him in supporting Wangchuk.

Arvind Kejriwal

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal is also scheduled to visit the protest site at 5 PM. Earlier, he had appealed to Wangchuk to end his hunger strike due to concerns over his health.

Rakesh Tikait

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait is expected to meet Wangchuk and extend his support to the ongoing protest.

Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed support for both Wangchuk and the students demanding fair examinations. He also assured that the Opposition would raise the issue during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament and urged the Central Government to begin a dialogue with the activist.

Government's Response Remains the Focus

As Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike enters Day 19, pressure continues to mount on the Central Government to respond to his demands.

With the Delhi High Court ordering daily health monitoring, political leaders visiting the protest site, and thousands participating in demonstrations across the country, attention is now focused on whether the government will initiate talks before Wangchuk's health deteriorates further.

The protest continues at Jantar Mantar, while supporters prepare for a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20.
