Did This 30 Old Pune Bridge Hide a Warning? Tourists Swept as Structure Fails

Pune (Maharashtra) [India] June 15:  It was around 3:30 pm on Sunday when the calm of Kundmala, a popular weekend spot in Pune’s Maval tehsil, broke into chaos. Families were enjoying near the Indrayani river when the old iron bridge, which stood there for nearly 30 years, suddenly gave way. Dozens were on the bridge, some fell straight into the flowing river. Police confirmed one death while three others were rescued in time.

The Ageing Bridge and Its Risk

The bridge, built three decades ago, had carried hundreds over time, but warnings about its weakening condition were ignored. MLA Sunil Shelke said nearly 100 people were on it during the incident. Some managed to swim to safety, but a few were swept away. Locals say the bridge had seen wear and tear for years. The structure wasn’t built to handle large crowds, especially during monsoon.

Tourists Flock in Big Numbers

Kundmala has always drawn weekend visitors from Pune and nearby towns. Its natural beauty and calm riverbanks make it a favourite for families. On weekends, people gather for picnics and peaceful time near the Indrayani river. But on this Sunday, excitement turned into emergency. People screamed for help as many fell into the river. Police teams rushed quickly, but many feared for their loved ones.

Rescue Teams in Action

As soon as the bridge collapsed, local police from Talegaon Dabhade reached the spot. Rescue operations began immediately. Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also sent to the area. Divers searched for those missing while ropes were used to support those trapped. District Collector was informed, and all help was promised. The fast action brought hope to families waiting near the riverbanks.

Calls for Caution in Monsoon

After the incident, NCP leader Supriya Sule expressed grief and said prayers for the victims. She also reminded everyone to be extra careful during the rainy season. Visiting tourist spots can be risky if safety rules are not followed. Bridges and old structures can become weak over time. Officials also urged local authorities to check the condition of such public places to prevent future mishaps.
