Mamata's Fury: 'Mothers, Sisters, Fight with Kitchen Tools!'
The release of the draft list is likely to escalate the political noise regarding SIR in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister, and the Trinamool Congress chief, has been opposing the exercise and alleging that the Centre and the Election Commission are utilizing SIR for the convenience of deleting the names of those who will vote for them but are not on the list, just before the election.
"You will snatch the rights of mothers and sisters in the name of SIR? They will bring police from Delhi during the election and intimidate mothers and sisters. Mothers and sisters, if your names are struck off, you have the tools, right? The tools you use during cooking. You have strength, right? You won't let it pass if your names are cut, right? The women will fight in the front, and the men will be behind them," she said.
BJP Strikes Back: Protecting Vote Banks of Illegal Immigrants
According to the BJP, on the contrary, the attack of Mamata Banerjee on the SIR is a strategy to shield her vote bank, which is made up of illegal immigrants.
Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said, "Mamata Banerjee is creating a ruckus as she fears losing power since the deceased, fake and illegal voters are being removed. Trinamool only has a difference of 22 lakh votes with BJP."
Final List in Feb, Assembly Polls to Follow
The publication of the draft list signals the conclusion of the Special Intensive Revision's first phase. The names of those missing from the draft list may be contacted and should be corrected.
Finally, the final list will be announced after objections have been disposed of, which is expected to take place in February next year. In Bengal, Assembly polls will be announced when the final list has been put out.The last SIR in Bengal was in 2002.
