Madhav Gadgil Honored as UNEP’s Champion of the Earth for 2024
Madhav Gadgil awarded UNEP’s 2024 Champion of the Earth for community-driven conservation.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] December 10 : India’s renowned ecologist, Madhav Gadgil, has been named one of the six ‘Champions of the Earth’ by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for 2024. Recognized in the Lifetime Achievement category, Gadgil’s impactful career spans six decades, focusing on ecosystem conservation, marginalized communities, and sustainable policymaking.
Trailblazing Career in Environmental Science
Gadgil has been a pioneer in community-driven conservation, conducting landmark environmental impact assessments and influencing public policy. UNEP lauded him for his work on protecting India’s Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. His “people’s scientist” approach has helped communities understand and protect their natural resources. “In a scientific career that has spanned six decades... Gadgil has always considered himself a ‘people’s scientist,’” noted UNEP.
The Seminal Gadgil Report
In 2011, Gadgil chaired the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, which proposed that 75% of the region be declared environmentally sensitive. The report emphasized safeguarding the ecologically fragile area amidst industrial threats and climate challenges. While some deemed the recommendations too restrictive, the report remains a cornerstone of environmental discourse.
Recognition Among Global Environmental Leaders
Gadgil joins other awardees, including Brazil’s Sonia Guajajara and China’s Lu Qi, recognized for policy leadership and science innovation, respectively. Their combined efforts underline the importance of global cooperation in tackling environmental degradation, desertification, and climate challenges.
A Durable Optimist with a Vision for the Future
Speaking to UNEP, Gadgil expressed hope for collective action, saying, “I’m a durable optimist – and hopeful that this progress will continue to gather pace.” His grassroots work with communities, particularly those granted forest rights, reflects his commitment to empowering people with knowledge and technical support to safeguard ecosystems.
The Fight for a Sustainable Planet
UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen praised the laureates, saying, “Extraordinary individuals are demonstrating that it is possible to defend and heal our planet.” Gadgil’s contributions highlight the need for continued activism, scientific breakthroughs, and inclusive policies to restore and protect the Earth.
