Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised with Spleen Injury After ODI vs Australia, Doubts over Upcoming South Africa Series
Shreyas Iyer has been taken to hospital and is in the ICU after injuring himself in an ODI against Australia at the SCG on Saturday.
New Delhi (India) October 27: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been taken to the hospital after suffering a rib injury during the series game against Australia. It has also cast serious doubt on his participation in the upcoming South Africa series.
Iyer ended up rushing to the hospital soon after returning to the dressing room in Australia. Iyers initially seemed to be hurt in his left rib cage while running backwards from backward point and diving forward to take a catch. It turned out to be a stunning catch of Alex Carey.
BCCI Confirms Spleen Laceration
Iyer had fainted after being taken to the dressing room on Saturday, and his vital parameters were very weak, as per a PTI report. He was then taken to hospital for a scan. However, the reports have come in, and it has been revealed that Iyer has a "laceration injury to the spleen", read the BCCI media release on Monday.
The BCCI statement said, "Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.
The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."
Doubt Over SA Series
Iyer's recovery, originally estimated at three weeks, now appears to have extended. This means that India’s No. 4 could possibly miss the home ODI series against South Africa, which starts in mid-November.
The 31-year-old will need to spend at least a week in the Sydney hospital before he can be declared fit enough to fly back to India.
Family and Support
Iyer's condition is "delicate but stable", Cricbuzz has reported. The report also added that the cricketer's few local friends are with him while a member of his family is expected to join as soon as the visa formalities are over. It also noted that the time of the event was inconvenient for Iyer’s family to apply for a visa, causing a delay in acceptance.
In the first two games, which were lost by the visitors, Iyer had scores of 11 and 61. India comfortably won the final ODI by nine wickets after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's star turns in the chase, to take the series 2-1.
Iyer is not part of the India squad for the upcoming five-match T20 series Down Under, beginning October 29.
India's next ODI assignment is the three-match series against South Africa commencing November 30.
