Tension Erupts in Dhaka: Hadi Supporters Threaten Yunus Govt Over Unmet Demands After Emotional Burial
Following the death and burial of Sharif Osman Hadi in Bangladesh's capital on Saturday, the atmosphere became tense. Supporters of the late man, in a forceful manner, cautioned the Muhammad Yunus, leading the interim government to take immediate action against those responsible for the killing and who caused the unrest.
New Delhi (India) December 20: On the burial of Sharif Osman Hadi in Bangladesh, tension escalated in the capital on Saturday as his supporters threatened the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus with dire consequences if their demands were not met.
They required the police to arrest all the people responsible for Hadi's murder within 24 hours, or else they warned that a large-scale protest would be held throughout the country. Supporters claimed that after the completion of the last rites, there was no more room for patience.
Funeral Draws Massive Crowds Amid National Mourning
Bangladesh held the funeral of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi on Saturday, drawing large crowds to the capital under heightened security after his death sparked unrest across the country.
The country is observing a day of state mourning following the death of 32 year old Hadi, a prominent figure in last year's student protests that led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government. After the announcement of Hadi's death six days after he was shot by unknown assailants, violent protests rocked Dhaka and other major cities.
The funeral was attended by interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, members of his advisory council, and army chief General Waker, uz, Zaman, along with other dignitaries. It was held at the South Plaza of the parliament complex on Manik Mia Avenue.
Pre-Funeral Violence Rocks Major Cities
Various locations in the country experienced violence and destruction on Thursday night such as the throwing of stones at the residence of the Assistant Indian High Commissioner in Chattogram, the beating of employees of the leading newspapers at their offices, and the desecration of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum just after Yunus announced Hadi's death.
Shooting Details and Rising Radical Attacks
On the 12th of December, while he was on a rickshaw in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka, he was shot at close range. Police said that two assailants on a motorcycle came to the place and after shooting the victim, they fled the scene.
The interim government on Friday called on the citizens to resist the violent acts of the "fringe elements" when the body of Hadi reached here from Singapore amid fresh unrest in the capital.
According to the police, after the body of Hadi arrived in Dhaka from Singapore, the main office of the left leaning Udichi Shilpigoshthi in the capital was set on fire by alleged radical right wing activists.
