BJP Appoints Sanjay Saraogi as Bihar State President Post-NDA's Massive Win; Replaces Dilip Jaiswal Under 'One Person, One Post' Policy
On Monday, Sanjay Saraogi, the former President of the Bihar BJP, was named the new President of the Bihar BJP. Dilip Kumar Jaiswal resigned from that position.
New Delhi (India) December 15: On Monday, Sanjay Saraogi was appointed as the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the state of Bihar. His appointment comes about a month after the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the Assembly elections in Bihar with a very large majority.
BJP National Secretary Arun Singh said, "Bharatiya Janata Party national president Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Sanjay Saraogi as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar with immediate effect," in a notification.
Replacing Jaiswal: BJP's 'One Person, One Post' Strategy in Action
Saraogi replaces the former state unit president, Dilip Kumar Jaiswal. Jaiswal has been replaced as part of the BJP's 'one person, one posit' policy.
When Jaiswal became president of the state BJP last year, he resigned from the Nitish Kumar cabinet after taking over the Deputy Chief Minister position from Samrat Choudhary.
From Cabinet Minister to Party President
Saraogi joined the state cabinet in February of this year and was given the important portfolios of Revenue and Land Reform.
Many political observers wondered why he did not get a place in the new ministry formed last month after the NDA's overwhelming victory and the BJP became the largest party.
Vaishya Leader with Strong Darbhanga Hold
A well-known Vaishya (merchant) face within the organisation, Sanjay Saraogi has been an MLA since February 2005 and is seen to have a strong hold on the Darbhanga Urban seat.
He was previously a minister in the NDA government and handled the important portfolios of Land and Revenue. His presidential appointment is viewed as necessary to retain social balance and to maintain a certain electoral calculation.
He is the chairperson of the Cow Protection Cell of the Bihar State BJP, a Member of the State Executive Committee, and has a reputation for taking a tough stance on many subjects.
From ABVP Activist to 6-Time MLA Victory Streak
Saraogi‘s political career began at the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as a student activist. He then joined the BJYM where he was involved. He was elected president of the BJP‘s city unit in Darbhanga in 2001.
Saroagi won the darbhanga election in February 2005 in the Bihar Assembly, beating Mohammad Mumtaz, an opponent of Rashtriya Janata Dal. He took another run from the race again in October 2005 when he defeated Dr. Madan Mohan Jha, a Congress candidate.
The election in 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025 was won by Sanjay Saraogi. He defeated Sultan Ahmad of RJD in the Bihar Assembly election for the 2010 Bihar Assembly election. He won again in 2015 and 2020, against Om Prakash Kheria and Amar Nath Gami of RJD, both of whom had been born in RJD.
In the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly election in Bihar, Saraogi beat Umesh Sahani to the Vikassheel Insaan Party candidate Umesh Sahani for 24,593.
