PM Modi urges productive and responsible participation
PM Modi took the opportunity to ridicule the opposition parties during his address to the media, stating that he would be more than happy to provide them with guidance on their official duties.
He said, “The game the Opposition have been playing for the past 10 years is no longer acceptable to the people. They should change their strategy. I am ready to give them a few tips."
"Whoever wants to do drama can do it. There should be delivery here and not drama. The emphasis should be on policy and not slogans," he added.
Additionally, the Prime Minister stated that he will continue to emphasize that members of Parliament (MP's) should formulate new plan/s for themselves at this time in order to be more effective as legislative leaders.
Modi offers "tips" to opposition
Also stated by PM Modi during his media briefing was that Parliament needs to function for the greater good and in seriousness of intent.
"This session should focus on what this Parliament thinks about the country, what it wants to do for the country. The focus should be on these issues. The Opposition should also fulfil its responsibility. They should raise such issues, strong issues. They should overcome the disappointment of defeat,” the PM said.
Opposition accuses PM Modi of turning Parliament into a "stage show"
Congress Party's General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused PM Modi of attempting to turn the Parliament into a "a Stage show" by raising legitimate issues on behalf of the Congress Party, such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Air Pollution in Delhi.
She said, "Election situation, SIR and pollution are huge issues. Let us discuss them. What is Parliament for? It's not a drama. Speaking about and raising issues is not drama. Drama is not allowing democratic discussions about issues that matter to the public.”
Winter Session to focus on major national issues and introduction of 14 new Bills
Modi's comments were made at the beginning of a shorter than average Parliament Winter Session, with the Government introducing a large number of new Laws, including the introduction of 14 new Bills.
Opposition parties are calling for discussions on many topics, including SIR for the Electoral Roll, suicides by some BLOs and National Security, relating to the November 10 terror incidents in Delhi.
The opposition parties have charged the government with "derailing Parliament" and making efforts to weaken it due to the Government reducing the length of the Winter Session and limiting opportunities for debate.
Economic Reforms Focus
The Winter Session will include discussions on Major National Issues, Legislative Business, and Economic Policies. PM Modi is calling upon every Parliament member to participate in this session focusing on being responsible participants.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will introduce a Bill called the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which she will amend for consideration of the Central Excise Act, 1944. The Government will introduce another Bill called the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025 and allocate it three hours of discussion time. The Government has proposed 13 Bills for consideration during the Winter Session, a lot of which have not been examined by a Standing Committee.
